Slavery and the Law
A film by Paula Heredia
Produced by Larry Garvin
Executive Produced by
Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and Joan Gabbidon.
Slavery and the Law depicts important events, people, and legal decisions that have shaped the legacy of slavery and racial discrimination in society today. Director Paula Heredia weaves interviews with scholars with a group of African-American teenagers in Brooklyn, who explore the history of slavery and the law by creating a mural. The film portrays the law as a living process to enforce, as well as a force redress oppression. Knowledge about the past flows seamlessly into hope for the future. The film’s lessons are clear: in learning about the past, we can see that laws are not forever written in stone, but that people can change the laws.
