CURRENT FEATURED MEMBER – VICTOR LESNIEWSKI (2013 BVEW Playwriting Fellow)

In One Sentence…

I write big worlds, often with a political bent.

Craft/Profession:

Playwright

Projects I’d like to get involved with:

Any theatre project that requires me to challenge myself. Especially if I need to do a large amount of intense research. That usually draws me in.

What I’m working on now:

I’m finishing up a fellowship with the Dramatists Guild, which has been a wonderful experience, in addition to gearing up for the production of my play Cloven Tongues this fall. The show will run in November at The Wild Project, directed by Michelle Bossy, and featuring Ema Lakovic, for whom I wrote the lead role. I’m also preparing for a trip out west this summer where I will workshop my brand new play about the Syrian Civil War at The Ground Floor, Berkeley Rep’s summer residency lab.

What “Big Vision Empty Wallet” means to me:

“If everything would come true, there’d be nothing left to do.” Lifted from my favorite band, but I think the idea applies here too, and it’s something I’m always trying to keep in mind.

The boys revel in a world of happy hours and happier endings, giving Peter Pan a run for his immature money. That is until the realities of New York City force their world of fun and gays to come crashing down.

What “Big Vision Empty Wallet” means to me:

BVEW means access. Access to an audience. Access to a creative peer group. This access is no longer limited by the factors that have historically limited the range of voices that could speak at “the big table”. Now in an age of instant access what does it mean to be an artist? To make something original? Seeing what other creative people are doing can inspire new ideas, more conversation, and hopefully better solutions.

FEATURED MEMBER – RODRIGO LOPRESTI

What “Big Vision Empty Wallet” means to me:

The true meaning of filmmaking and art. Never enough money but we make it work. Creative means problem solver. It all goes back to design at the end of the day. We have access to so much fascinating technology now. I remember being in a band as a kid, having to record a demo seemed like the biggest obstacle. A tascam 4-track cassette recorder was insanely expensive and hardly accessible. Now our computers come with Garage Band, and I-movie. You can shoot HD video on your smart phone. That’s just crazy to me.

Projects I’d like to work on:

You know, good stuff. I like to work with people who put it all on the line.

Without the chance of loss, there’s no real gain. Explorations of the human condition, family relationships, honest human behavior, the psychology of the mind and stories about people who are miss understood. I don’t believe in bad people. Everybody clap!).  Two films I worked on are releasing this spring/summer, so go see them!  PHIL SPECTOR premieres this March 24th on HBO and THE CANYONS (yup as seen in NYT article with Lindsay Lohan) opens sometime this summer.

Projects I’d like to get involved with:

Stories about the human condition really get me. So more of those! Honestly, writing has been the greatest blessing in my life to date. I can’t imagine anything more gratifying than telling a story and gathering friends to help me tell it. …sure, maybe having a child is up there, but since that’s not happening for a while, so movies it is! If none of these scripts take the cake at all the bigs fests this year (which would be shocking because my mom thinks they’re really “pro”), then I’m making them happen. You heard it here first. What I’m working on now:

Currently trying to find a home for the musical Costs of Living, which is based on a true story of two immigrant cab drivers sharing opposite shifts off the same medallion.  The competitive nature and cutthroat stakes of their survival scenario come to a head one night leaving one man dead and another brutalized.  So, a family comedy… also writing a new piece called Peter and the Wall for the 2013 Dramatists Guild Fellowship about an American man who must fly to Japan to identify and claim the body of his dead husband, whose heart stopped while traveling on business.  Since they don’t really have a metric to gauge marriage equality, he is forced to jump through a bunch of different hoops before he can be reunited with his husband.  So, another family comedy…

Projects I’d like to get involved with:

A wise, wise woman once asked me “what is it about your play that you must absolutely write about that will absolutely get your ass kicked by your friends and family?” So really, projects that shed to light the marginalized or disenfranchised.  Things that question the status quo.  We are finally living in an age where the people who know better are no longer students shouting in the streets- they’re entrepreneurs, tech geeks, journalists with iphones and idealism all positioned to circumvent  traditional barriers placed before them and shed a little light, find their audience, raise awareness.  It’s kind of a fantastic time to be alive and an artist.

I’d love to work on a project that allowed for the story and character development of a series, but had a finite run so you could plan how you would build to a satisfying ending.  And then you’d get to start all over again working with those same collaborators on the next tale – you’d benefit from the experience of having already worked together, but the relationships would hopefully stay fresh because you’d be coming together again to create a new world.

With my marketing and sales background, I will also be working on it from that end as well.  Working on a TV sitcom, multi-camera in front of a live audience, is my ultimate goal.

What “Big Vision Empty Wallet” means to me:

Big Vision Empty Wallet isn’t an idea, it’s a formula. The money doesn’t define the project, the artist does. Sure, money is convenient, but the lack of funding forces the artist into making creative decisions. Before I moved to New York City from Central New York, I was looking into furthering my education into a master’s program at Tisch. I didn’t pursue it because it wasn’t necessary as my career has been on a great start without it, but I’ll always remember what my mentor Mark Cunningham told me when the question of paying the tuition arose. “How am I going to pay for this?” I asked. “Don’t worry about that. When an opportunity like this comes along we’re not going to let something like money stand in the way…”. I’ll never forget those words because they still apply today. Empty wallet. Our wallets will never be full, no matter how much we make, but as long as our minds are full, the money won’t matter.

I’m someone who believes that the only person that can stop you is yourself.

    Craft/Profession:

Freelance independent producer/production manager and commercial coordinator.

    What I’m working on now:

Currently producing a comedy web series titled “Guardian Angels”, based on the actual street heroes in the 70′s and 80′s. It takes place in Brooklyn, and stars Jeff Seal and Chris Manley. Also in post production, a comedy short called “Sagittarius”, starring Matt Hobby and Philip Quinaz. Directed by Brian Shoaf.

Projects I’d like to get involved with:

The projects I would like to get involved in are my own. I want to make my move into directing concurrent with producing for other artists. I feel no one enters this business without dreaming that one day they can make it, and that’s exactly where my sights are. I’ve learned that this business can crush you into discouragement, but if you hold your ground and preserve a positive attitude you will never regret sticking with it. The money has a lot to do with that. To the regular 9-5 crowd, I think when you tell them you’re in film, tv or a freelancer, they have this idea that you make more money. The numbers may say so, but you’re always investing in new cameras, lenses, lights, software etc. that you remain pretty stagnant. Why? It’s because as filmmakers, we’re always looking forward and we know the work and time we put into each project rewards us with new relationships and a world of experience.

BVEW is like a rest stop for the film/television community. On a long car ride you go to a rest stop and its like an oasis in the middle of the unknown. A place to re-fuel, get food, speak with nice locals who can help you, and take a break from “out there.” BVEW feels like that to me. Need to refuel and get new interesting ideas? Go to a BVEW screening, Need supplies? Go on their site and post about who/what you need for your next film. Need people who get you and want to help? Go to BVEW. BVEW is a revelation. Suddenly, I feel like there’s this whole network of people who want the same thing I want – the opportunity to do what I love – at my fingertips. I am an editor by profession, though I also write, and have been honing my craft as a director. I love working in both film and theatre (I truly enjoy working with actors and love to explore in rehearsal, my favorite part of the process). Each profession compliments the other and helps me improve my craft among them all.

    What I’m working on now:

A very interesting viral project (which I can’t talk about right now).  My passion project is bringing my feature film, “Eventually Yours,” to life. Money is the only obstacle right now (isn’t it always?) I’m also writing a screenplay based on the life of Preston Sturges and just completed an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.” My short film, “Walt Whitman Never Paid For It,” recently screened in the NYLA Film Festival and the NY

New Filmmaker’s Series, and we’re awaiting results from other festival entries. I’ve also been thinking about directing another play (possibly Patrick Marber’s “Closer”) but I need God to create a few more hours in the day.

Projects I’d like to get involved with:

I’ve been very lucky to be able to work in many disciplines as an editor, both in commercials and longer format, and what I truly enjoy is when I can create something that has a direct benefit to someone, that changes their life. It doesn’t happen very often but, when it does, it’s exhilarating. As far as directing projects, my eye is always on my feature, “Eventually Yours.” I’ve been working with the same cast for five years in developing the script and I feel I owe them a film just for hanging in there!

It’s a brilliant script with inspired direction in a beautiful production – I am very fortunate to be the only performer in the show and surrounded by an incredibly innovative production team of artists. The play asks: How far would you go to protect your family or ensure them a place in the Kingdom of Heaven? A haunting story of fear and love, faith and reason, Convergence explores the intersection of seemingly opposed forces and the explosive consequences of their collision.
