“Yes, there was a hurricane Carmen once, but here’s the difference. It blew through and was over in a day or two. This storm won’t be like that.” “Opinionated since birth.” Carmen Rio is an American actress, singer, and writer. Carmen Rio was born Carmen Rijo Vargas in New York, NY. Both her father Jorge Rijo and Luz Del Carmen Vargas de Rijo are Dominican. Her first languages are English and Spanish. Carmen Rio grew up in New York city where influenced by her mother’s musical and artistic family she studied dance and music in addition to excelling academically. As a child she was known for being respectfully self-willed but also self-governed. “And only when I have to and only as I must.” Carmen attended boarding school in Boston and studied in France where she focused on French language, writing, and the arts. It was during her studies away from home where Carmen decided to look for ways she could change the world for the better considering a career in the U.N. Carmen studied at Columbia University where she earned her B.A. in political science and economics and learned German and Portuguese. Her decision to change the world through the arts was cemented early on and soon after she continued her artistic training at Terry Schreiber studios, Bova Actor’s Studios, and the School for Film and Television. Ms. Rio was also accepted into music conservatory but opted to continue her music studies with Ann Ruckert in the Nadia Boulanger method and at the New School. She was also a principle dancer in the LEP Salsa Dance Company. With the intent of making film and television her career she has appeared in numerous film and television projects including One Life to Live, As the World Turns, The Rachel Ray Show and “Production” by Best of 7 Films (Official Selection; Langston Hughes African-American Film Festival (Audience Award), Urbanworld Film Festival, Black Harvest Film Festival, Women’s International Film Festival, Sacramento International Film Festival, NYC Downtown Shorts Film Festival. Since then Ms. Rio also produces independently (SnakeCharmer Entertainment) in order to create roles for women more representative of her own experiences creating roles that have purpose and inspire and teach women and girls to feel truly free, empowered, and worthy. “I’m about a women’s voice and story. Women should feel confident and free to be themselves, express themselves, learn to self-preserve, and follow their dreams. My sense is that life is a wonderful adventure. I also believe in accountability and personal responsibility. I believe in shedding ideas of victimization and embracing empowerment.” Carmen is an activist and is involved in the following causes Celiac Awareness, Save the NYPL, PCRM Healthy School Lunches/School Lunch Revolution. She is also involved in the following charities and organizations; ASPCA, Baiting Hallow Horse Rescue, Dress for Success, New York Cares, Women’s Education Project, Woodstock Sanctuary, ACLU, Art for Change, Demos and the World Policy Institute. Carmen is a member of NY Women in Film, Big Vision Empty Wallet and Angaelica Films. Carmen is a vegan, has a multitude of allergies, and is known for being very funny. She is an avid reader and owns over 300 books, is a formidable cook, and marathon trains. Hates shopping. Loves to travel and only takes the bus while on city vacations. Extremely driven. Has commented on herself “It’s no easy deal and it’s no free ride. I love hard and am hard on the ones I love.” “Opinionated since birth.” Trivia: Was born with blonde hair and has terrible penmanship.
